Renting a car in Oman: a complete guide

Table of Contents

As an independent traveller, renting a car in Oman will ensure you unparalleled freedom to stop wherever you want and whenever you want. It will allow you to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations at your own pace. However, you may feel worried about renting a car in a foreign country. What about costs? Is it safe? And what about the driving rules in the country? This guide will give you an easy-to-follow check-list and the necessary information so you have a great rental experience.

1) Is it worth renting a car in Oman?

Definitely. Oman is a large country and the public transport network is not well developed yet. What’s more, having a car will allow you to explore some of the country’s beautiful wild landscapes away from the cities and common public transport routes. In Oman, it is the key that will facilitate the creation of your own personalised itinerary.

Finally, it will make it easier for you to engage with Omani people as you see their daily life with the specific sounds, views and colours of the country.

My own experience has been very positive. I’ve chosen to rent a car on a monthly basis and I’ve benefited from having a newish car (only 5,000 km when I first got it) with support when necessary.

2) Where to rent a car in Oman and what to check

2.1 Points you need to look at before renting a car:

  1. The type of car suited to your itinerary and the number of passengers. See notes below about renting a 4WD.
  2. Type of transmission: In Oman, rental cars tend to be automatic. You may find it difficult to rent a manual car.
  3. The minimum and maximum age and country of residence of the driver: Most car rental companies require drivers to be at least 25 years old, as statistics show that younger drivers tend to have higher accident rates. Some may accept younger drivers, but it often comes with additional fees. Double-check any age restrictions to avoid unexpected costs.
  4. Mileage and fuel policy: Does the rental include unlimited kilometres, or is there a set limit? This is important if you plan on driving long distances. If you plan on driving to Salalah, you should also check if the rental car company allows you to drive there and back from Muscat.
  5. Pick-up and drop-off location, including opening hours and specific requirements. If you plan on renting a car from Muscat International airport, you will find that hours are flexible. However, smaller rental agencies have more limited hours – or you may need to pay after-hour service fees.
  6. The rental car’s cancellation and modification policy
  7. Deposit: Many companies require a credit card hold for security, so ensure your card has sufficient funds.
  8. Insurance coverage: make sure you understand the insurance options and what they cover. In Oman, comprehensive coverage is highly recommended, as the terrain and driving conditions can vary.
  9. Authorisation to cross the border into UAE – if you are planning on visiting the Emirates. You may need additional insurance and permissions to take the car outside Oman.
  10. Ferry Authorization for Masirah Island if you are planning on visiting the island. Some agencies restrict ferry travel, so double-check this to avoid complications
  11. Price of extras (GPS, baby seat, additional driver, etc.)
  12. The ratings you can find for the car rental company: check online reviews to know about customer service and reliability.

2.2 Points you need to check at the agency and in the rental car lot:

  • Contact number to reach if the car breaks down or if there is an emergency.
  • Whether the tyres are properly inflated.
  • Whether the fuel tank is full
  • Pre-existing scratches and dents on the car. Make sure they get marked on the rental car contract.

As a general rule, renting a car in Oman is fairly expensive. You should be cautious when choosing to go for extremely cheap local rental agencies. Sometimes, lower prices can come with bad surprises. Remember that, in general, you get what you pay for. So double-check all the conditions and hidden extra costs.

Here is a platform that I recommend (no affiliate links): https://www.discovercars.com/  This is a customer-rated comparison site that will give you an overview of the prices and services offered by different rental car companies. You can use filters. Another site is: https://www.rentalcars.com/

I cannot recommend one specific rental car company over another. Within one company, one office may be very different from another. It basically depends on the workers and professionalism of the specific office. That said, international rental car agencies tend to have certain rules no matter where you are, which can give you more peace of mind.

3. The documents you need and conditions to rent a car

Filling in a form
  • A valid passport: as a foreigner, you will need to prove your identity and nationality. This will also allow the agency to check the driver’s age. As mentioned before, most rental car companies don’t accept drivers under the age of 25.
  • A valid driving license: A valid international driving permit (IDP) and your national driver’s license are usually required if you’re visiting as a tourist. Some rental agencies accept foreign licenses, but it’s safer to carry an IDP just in case. Your driving license should have a license number, photograph, and date of issue.
  • Note: according to the Royal Omani Police (ROP), you do not need an international Driving Licence.
  • A credit card: The card should have sufficient credit to cover the security deposit, which can vary based on the rental agency. They don’t always accept debit cards for the deposit, so you should plan on having a credit card with you.
  • Proof of Return Flight: some rental agencies may ask tourists to show a return ticket to confirm rental duration.
  • The reservation Confirmation

4. Do you need to rent a 4WD in Oman? What size of car should you rent?

Renting a 4WD is expensive and may not be an absolute necessity. However, if you plan to explore off-road destinations like Jebel Shams or Wahiba Sands, a 4WD is essential. Another option may be to get a local driver with a 4WD for these 2 destinations only during your trip (check options to see what’s best for you).

As a rule, these are the different sizes:

  • Economy Car: Sits 4, with cargo space for 1 large suitcase and 1 small suitcase.
  • Compact Car: Sits 5, with room for 2 large suitcases in the boot of the car.
  • Mid-Size (Intermediate) Car: Sits 5, with space for 2 large suitcases and 1 small suitcase.
  • Full-Size Car: Sits 5, offering ample cargo space for 3 large suitcases and more.

5. Essential tips for renting a car in Oman

1. Book as early as possible to get a good price.

2.Motorways and main roads are in excellent condition (3 and even 4 lanes) If you decide to go off-the-beaten-track, however, expect to find dirt roads. This may be challenging but manageable.

3. The budget for renting a car is high but the price of petrol is cheap in Oman (is that much of a consolation? Not sure…).

4. Take fuel stops regularly. Finding a petrol station won’t be a problem in cities and towns. However, you may be surprised by the scarcity of stations in more remote regions or even on motorways between cities.

6. Driving laws in Oman: learn the rules of the country

1. Speed Limits

  • City Areas: 60 km/h (37 mph) in general.
  • Highways and Rural Roads: 120 km/h (75 mph

Note: always check the speed signs, although at times it may be tricky to find them. Also, be aware that there are speed cameras everywhere! – and I mean everywhere!

2. Buckle up!

Drivers are expected to wear a seat belt at all times. The police can fine you for not wearing one.

3. Drunk Driving

Oman has a zero-tolerance policy for drinking and driving. The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.0%, and penalties for driving under the influence include heavy fines and license suspension.

4. Mobile Phones

As in most countries, using a mobile phone while driving is illegal. The police stopped me once to check if I had my mobile phone next to me in the car (fortunately, it was in my bag!).

5. Traffic Lights

It’s important to stop when the traffic lights turn orange. Running a red light is considered very serious and can result in fines or penalties. In some cases, your license may be suspended.

This was your complete guide to renting a car in Oman in 2024! From choosing the right car for your adventure to understanding the road rules, you’re now ready to hit the road and explore this stunning country. Whether you’re cruising along the coast, zig-zagging up mountains, or discovering the joys of sliding around in the desert, Oman’s roads offer a wide range of driving experiences. So enjoy the ride! 🚗
